Impulse faces Cyclops at a particularly bad point in the battle. The X-Men have been fighting a much larger force, and their individual successes haven't removed the pressure of being outnumbered. His rounded helmet hides his face behind a dark opening. Beside the Guard's more visibly human members, that gives him a closed-off, almost machine-like appearance. The debut doesn't require an explanation of everything under the suit for him to be a threat. He lines up an energy attack while Cyclops prepares his own. Scott recognizes the danger, but he still needs to put this opponent down. The beams fire, and both combatants collapse. That is a substantial result for a character who has barely been introduced. Impulse doesn't have to defeat the entire team. Taking its field leader out of the immediate action makes the position around Lilandra much worse. The simultaneous hit also keeps Scott's competence intact. He sees what is coming and fights back. The trouble is that he cannot make the other man's shot disappear simply by landing his own. Sometimes being fast enough to answer still leaves both people on the ground. In the broader fight, this is the moment when the Guard's numbers begin to tell. The X-Men can trade blows and win individual encounters, yet every exchange consumes people they cannot easily spare. Impulse supplies a sharp little demonstration of that arithmetic. The story doesn't pause to turn him into a grand rival for Cyclops. It gives him one dangerous exchange, then lets the consequences spread into the confrontation beside the crystal. A brief appearance can change the situation without needing a whole origin attached to it.
