Charles Xavier remains the founder and teacher behind these X-Men, but the Phoenix years repeatedly put distance between his intentions and what he can actually know. His relationship with Lilandra draws him toward a much larger universe. The emotional bond is real, and so are the obligations that come with her position. Through her, Charles has a life beyond the school, even while the school continues to depend on him as its point of reference. When he believes the X-Men have died after the Antarctic disaster, grief helps pull him away from Earth. His departure makes the team's independence more than a classroom goal. They continue surviving, changing and making decisions while the person who brought them together is elsewhere. That creates a difficult reunion. In #129, Charles is overjoyed to find them alive, then quickly runs into trouble by treating them as though they are still waiting for him to teach them how to function. Scott tries to explain the people they have become. Charles hears a failure of discipline where Scott sees a team with its own working relationships. The conflict is valuable because neither the affection nor the mistake needs to be exaggerated. Xavier genuinely loves these people. That love doesn't automatically tell him how to listen to them. His later acknowledgment to Warren that he has misjudged the situation gives the mentor room to recognize his own limitations. Phoenix brings those limits into painful focus. Expertise, telepathy and years of teaching cannot provide a guarantee of safety. Charles can argue for Jean, use his knowledge of Shi'ar custom and try to protect the family he helped create. He cannot simply order the tragedy to stop. The teacher ends this era having been forced to learn alongside his students.
