Sean Cassidy changes the age and rhythm of this team. He has professional experience, family history and enough years behind him that the mansion cannot plausibly be the beginning of everything important in his life. That becomes wonderfully concrete when he takes the others to Cassidy Keep. A teammate who usually appears in a yellow-and-green costume suddenly has an ancestral home, local connections and a cousin with a very unpleasant welcome prepared. The trip lets the group see part of Sean's world, even if their holiday collapses almost immediately. His sonic power also gives him a broad role in the field. He can fly, move through a battle above the others and deliver an attack whose force is easy to underestimate until something breaks. The scream makes his presence unmistakable, but Sean's usefulness also comes from watching, assessing and understanding what a crisis needs. That judgment costs him dearly against Moses Magnum in #119. Banshee pushes his voice hard enough to counter the attack on Japan and damages his vocal cords. A power that has carried him through years of danger suddenly becomes something he cannot depend on. The story allows a life to remain around that loss. Sean's relationship with Moira matters in its own right, and staying with her after the Proteus tragedy is a choice with emotional substance. His explicit departure from regular duty comes in #129, rather than at the instant of the injury. Banshee belongs firmly in the Phoenix-era portrait, even though he doesn't remain an active combatant to its conclusion. His place in the group is built from experience and affection as well as decibels. Leaving the traveling roster gives those relationships a different setting; it doesn't make them disappear.
