Moira arrives at Xavier's school in X-Men #96 as the new housekeeper. It's a deceptively modest introduction for somebody who responds to a demon attack by getting involved in the defense. The immediate appeal is practical. The house is in danger, people are fighting, and Moira doesn't wait to be assigned the role of helpless bystander. Sean's surprise and interest have good reason to arrive together. Her place is in the life of the school, supporting the field team without joining its missions. Running the place matters. So does being somebody the residents can turn to when the founder is away or when another crisis has made the household's normal arrangements impossible. Those jobs are easy to leave out of a superhero group portrait. Nobody flies because somebody bought groceries or made sure the school remained livable. Yet a team that operates from a shared home needs people who can keep that home functioning between disasters. Moira's developing connection with Sean helps make the mansion feel less like a facility. Two adults can notice each other, go out together and try to have an ordinary conversation in the middle of all this. Their Christmas outing in #98 belongs to the same story as the Sentinel attack because it shows the life the attack interrupts. There are further things to learn about her, but the introduction already establishes a useful temperament. She is difficult to intimidate, prepared to act and much less easily confined by her apparent job description than the new X-Men might expect. For a group trying to become a household, that is a substantial addition. They have gained another person who will stand her ground when the front door opens on something monstrous.
