Krakoa brought a large collection of heroes together. Living with one another afterward is a different assignment. By X-Men #96, the continuing field team is Cyclops, Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Colossus and Banshee, with Xavier at the school. Sunfire has left. Most of the older students have stepped away. Thunderbird's death is fresh enough to shape how Scott looks at every new danger. This is a small, tense household. Some people have crossed the world to get there. Their training, temperaments and ideas about authority don't match. A Danger Room session can expose as much trouble between teammates as it does weakness in their combat technique. Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum give that friction room to develop across #96–100. A demon on the school grounds forces them to discover how they respond when the obvious attacks fail. The airport confrontation puts Scott's family ties directly in the line of fire. Stephen Lang's Sentinels take the familiar threat of mutant persecution into an orbital prison. Jean is still connected to this world, even after stepping away from the regular team. Her return to the action becomes essential before this short era is over. Moira MacTaggert also arrives, apparently to run the household, and makes a rather forceful first impression when the house needs defending. The group has not yet settled into the easy familiarity later images can suggest. Wolverine is abrasive enough to frighten his own teammates. Kurt's humor can make that worse. Sean has to be the adult who interrupts. Storm and Peter are learning the contours of a very unfamiliar life. There is already enough here for a family, but nobody gets to skip the awkward beginning. These five issues show the new X-Men discovering what it costs to remain together after the mission that introduced them is over.
