Alex Summers enters X-Men #54 at a graduation ceremony. Scott is proud of him. There is a perfectly ordinary future visible for a moment, before the Living Pharaoh's people carry Alex into a story he never volunteered to join.
That starting point makes his emergence as Havok different from an eager recruitment. Alex's powers are something other people are hunting, measuring and trying to exploit. He is forced to learn what his body can do while the consequences are already happening around him.
His relationship to the Living Pharaoh ties his ability to absorb cosmic energy directly to the danger. Power is moving through bodies that Alex doesn't yet understand, and the enemy has a much clearer idea of what he wants from the arrangement. Being immensely powerful is little comfort when someone else knows the operating instructions.
The black costume and concentric chest design give Havok a striking identity during the Sentinel period. It looks unlike Scott's familiar uniform, which is useful for a character who could otherwise be introduced and left permanently in his older brother's shadow.
By #65, Alex is working with the X-Men in costume as part of the Z'nox defense. His place in the plan requires coordination with Jean and Scott. The brothers' energy powers can contribute to the same effort without being interchangeable.
Scott's concern is understandable, but Alex has his own will and his own impatience. Their interactions can hold affection and rivalry at the same time. The confident field leader everyone else knows is suddenly dealing with a younger brother who doesn't always want to be managed.
The late original-team era gives Alex a place to stand before any later team leadership or mythology accumulates around him. He is powerful, unsettled and trying to claim some ownership of a life that has just become public property to a succession of enemies.
