Lorna's first X-Men story begins with lost time and strangers who seem to know more about her than she does. In #49, Bobby finds her in San Francisco, far from home and emerging from a trance. The green hair she has been concealing is one visible sign of mutation, but she doesn't yet understand the magnetic power that Mesmero wants to bring out and use. Her introduction is full of people trying to tell her who she is. Mesmero's operation gives her power a grand presentation and supplies a family story designed to secure her loyalty. The supposed connection to Magneto is treated as something that should determine which side she belongs on. Lorna's decision in #52 depends on challenging that story. Bobby brings information that contradicts what she has been told, and she turns against Mesmero's side. For this early account, the important point is the choice she makes with the evidence available to her then. Later explanations aren't needed to overwrite the uncertainty of those pages. Her magnetic abilities immediately give the original cast another major force to work with. By #60 she is training with the team, and by #65 she is part of the effort against the Z'nox, working alongside Xavier rather than simply being another person the original five must rescue. The attraction between her and Alex develops within that wider change. Bobby's disappointment is part of the group's friction, but it shouldn't swallow her introduction. She has already had enough people trying to assign her a role for their own reasons. Lorna expands the team by arriving with questions the existing students cannot answer merely by handing her a uniform. She needs to understand her powers, decide whom to trust and find out what kind of life she wants. The X-Men offer a place to begin that work.
