Crimson Commando arrives with the bearing of a man who thinks his experience ought to settle the argument. The problem is what he has already done while trusting his own judgment that completely. His introduction alongside Stonewall and Super Sabre comes before their government recruitment. These are older war veterans who have turned their idea of justice into hunting people. Their encounter with a powerless Storm exposes how far that reasoning has gone. Her innocence doesn't become a sufficient reason to leave her alone once she threatens their secret. Freedom Force comes afterward. He and Stonewall are placed on the team as part of the government's handling of their crimes. He is a later recruit, not someone standing beside Mystique at the original Magneto arrest. His contribution is experience, conditioning and practical fighting skill rather than a spectacular energy display. He knows how to think like a soldier. Unfortunately, being good at carrying out an operation says very little about whether he should have chosen that operation in the first place. The headquarters introduction gives him a sensible point amid all the hostility: teammates are supposed to cover one another's weaknesses. Coming from somebody with his history, that observation is uncomfortable without being wrong. He can understand cooperation while having badly failed at compassion. That is the tension worth keeping in his Freedom Force spotlight. His service record and competence are real parts of the character. So are the victims of his private version of justice. A government assignment gives him another structure in which to operate, but it doesn't erase the reasons he needed that arrangement. Mystique may need another experienced fighter. The reader has every reason to watch what he does with the second chance.
