Max Rocker is one of the established Gladiators waiting in the ring when the New Mutants get pulled into this world. His horse-like features, including his hooves, make him easy to pick out among a cast whose bodies have become part of the attraction. The New Mutants story uses him as a physical arena opponent rather than stopping for a new origin. He belongs to the fighting population Dazzler already knows. That gives the Theatre a sense of continuity: this was somebody else's dangerous everyday life before Roberto and Amara were kidnapped into it. His appearance also helps show how the business packages mutation. Outside, an unusual body can make someone a target for hostility. Inside, that same body becomes something patrons will pay to watch. Being valuable to the show doesn't mean being respected by the people buying tickets. There is room for strength and skill in Max's role, but very little room for the performer to determine what the performance is for. The people above the pit decide the stakes. The fighters are left to live through them. It's worth keeping this period of Max's story distinct from a simple roster of loyal supervillains. The operation is under psychic influence, and several people fighting in it are being used. Their visible participation doesn't automatically tell us what they would choose without the controller in the background. Max isn't given the same interior attention as Dazzler or the kidnapped New Mutants here. His presence still matters. The arena has regulars, and rescuing the familiar heroes doesn't erase what that place is doing to everybody else.
