Alexander Flynn appears to be the man giving the orders when Roberto is introduced to the Gladiators. He speaks through a hologram, explains the terms and expects the prisoners to cooperate. Having somebody else deliver the beatings doesn't stop him from being the person who seems to own the room. The important detail in this particular story is that the apparent Flynn isn't the real explanation. The New Mutants eventually uncover a controller behind that projected face. Treating his image as proof that Flynn is physically running the operation would give the disguise exactly the credibility it was meant to have. That makes the hologram a useful piece of the Theatre's machinery. The fighters can be given a boss to fear without being allowed near the person actually directing events. An argument with an image can't turn into a successful escape by grabbing the man behind the desk. It also makes the cruelty feel administrative. The threats are delivered as if they're ordinary conditions of employment. Fight when told. Don't leave. Accept that somebody more vulnerable will suffer if you refuse. There is no good-faith negotiation available, even though the presentation resembles a conversation. Flynn belongs in this thread as the face the operation uses, separate from the people in the arena and separate from the hidden controller. The distinction matters especially in a story where appearances are being managed so carefully. A familiar name and a recognizable face can make a lie easier to accept, but neither tells the prisoners where the real power is.
