SCP-051: Japanese Obstetrical Model
This one deals with pregnancy loss, and the ordinary appearance of the object makes the story especially grim.
SCP-051 is a small ivory model of a pregnant woman. The abdomen opens to reveal detailed organs and a tiny removable fetus. It could sit among historical medical objects without looking particularly out of place.
Exposure can cause catastrophic harm during pregnancy, and some people feel drawn to handle the model. The Foundation restricts access accordingly. The consequences are awful enough.
What complicates it is the damaged Japanese text found with the model. The surviving passage describes a prayer or spell intended to draw harmful forces away from unborn children and trap them inside the object. Supposedly, it was meant to protect people.
Too much of the text has deteriorated to reconstruct the complete instructions. That leaves its original purpose and present behavior frustratingly disconnected. Was something lost, broken, or misunderstood? The file doesn't resolve it.
It spent decades in a museum before the Foundation acquired it. Think about how many objects get preserved while the knowledge surrounding them disappears. Here, that missing context might have been the most important part of the collection.
