SCP-049: Plague Doctor SCP-049 can hold a polite conversation, discuss its research, and treat the staff like fellow professionals. That familiarity is dangerous. The plague-doctor appearance isn't a costume in the usual sense. Its mask and robes have become part of its body. It can kill through direct contact, then operate on the corpse and sometimes get it moving again. The person who was there doesn't come back with it. It calls this a cure for the “Pestilence.” Nobody can get a useful explanation of what that means, and the article never confirms that it has identified a real disease. Dr. Hamm spends months interviewing it before it suddenly decides he needs treatment too. After killing and operating on him, SCP-049 insists it saved him. Its explanation starts falling apart under questioning, but it keeps returning to that claim. That conversation is where the character really works. You can hear pride, distress, and something that might be doubt, without getting a clean answer about how much it understands. Hamm had become a familiar colleague. Familiarity didn't protect him once the doctor decided its work mattered more than the person standing in front of it. https://t.co/O1pYA7Dj4M
