SCP-047: Microbial Mutagen
A rusted gas cylinder doesn't look like much beside some of the things in Foundation custody. SCP-047 makes that a very bad reason to underestimate it.
The cylinder's material slowly becomes a gas when exposed to air. The gas doesn't directly alter human cells. Instead, it changes bacteria, particularly the microbes already living on and inside people. Something your body normally tolerates can become a serious infection.
That distinction makes the whole thing unpleasant. You don't need to bring home some visibly alien organism. The raw material is already there.
The file describes dangerous strains with increased resistance and spread, but the Foundation keeps experimenting anyway. Only after another containment breach does it ban work involving bacteria that were already pathogenic.
Its recovery account is ugly too. The original laboratory staff died after the cylinder was damaged, although they followed quarantine procedures and kept the outbreak contained.
There is something bleak about that detail. The people inside did their jobs, and it mattered to everybody outside the laboratory. It simply didn't save them. A lot of SCP stories end with containment restored; this one makes you stop and consider what that success actually cost.
