The original Reavers have a remote hideout, an arsenal built into their bodies and a way to rob people on the other side of the world without worrying about the journey home.
Their first team appearance is Uncanny X-Men #229, by Chris Claremont and Marc Silvestri. They operate from an Australian ghost town, use Gateway's teleportation and strike far from the place where they keep their stolen wealth. The distance that should make a robbery difficult barely matters to them.
The opening attack on a Hong Kong bank also brings Jessan Hoan into their hands. Taking money isn't enough. Pretty Boy wants access to what she knows, and his method involves changing the person he has kidnapped rather than persuading her to cooperate.
The X-Men arrive after their own apparent deaths in Dallas. Their attack breaks up the Reavers' operation and leaves them with a hidden base, so this ugly little robbery story becomes the start of a very different period for the heroes.
Bonebreaker, Pretty Boy and Skullbuster are the three named members at the center of this original gang. There are other cyborgs, but they aren't all individually introduced. The three named men are enough to give the gang a recognizable face without turning every armed figure in the town into a separate character.
Gateway needs a distinction too. The Reavers are using him; that doesn't make him another enthusiastic participant in their crimes.
By the end of the issue, the gang has lost its hideout and most of its members. The X-Men are left standing in a town full of stolen property, with Jessan to help and a new place to stay. Bonebreaker, Pretty Boy and Skullbuster have escaped through a portal.
