Malice can make the person being attacked look like the one responsible for everything going wrong. She takes control of a host and uses their abilities, their face and their existing relationships. A distinctive choker signals her presence, but the people watching a public disaster aren't necessarily going to understand what that means. Dazzler is the first major example in this stretch of the story. Malice gets inside her life and pushes her into behavior that brings the X-Men looking for her. In Uncanny X-Men #214, the confrontation becomes a nightmare of changing targets as Malice jumps between bodies. Hitting the villain means hitting a friend, and stopping one possessed teammate doesn't necessarily stop the attack. Storm's ability to face her own darker feelings becomes important in resisting her. Malice expects something she can exploit, and Ororo isn't as easy to take over as she assumes. Then Polaris becomes her host, and the Marauders gain a terrifyingly powerful figure at the front of their attacks. For Havok, seeing Lorna on the other side isn't simply a tactical problem. He knows the woman whose body is being used against them. Fighting effectively and trying to reach her are now tangled together. Lorna isn't choosing the Marauders. That distinction matters every time Malice appears wearing her face. The rest of the team can injure people or kill them. Malice can leave someone alive and take away control of what they say, what they do and how everyone else remembers the encounter. She makes the team's violence follow people into parts of their lives that a gun can't reach.
