Vertigo doesn't have to knock somebody through a wall to leave them helpless. She interferes with their sense of balance until standing, moving and judging distance become problems of their own. That's a nasty ability for this particular group to have. A person trying to escape the Marauders needs to find the exit, keep their footing and avoid whatever is coming toward them. Vertigo can make all of that harder while the rest of the team carries on attacking. She's the Savage Land character, rather than somebody making her first appearance with this group. The early Marauders pull together new killers and existing threats, and her presence gives the lineup another familiar connection without changing what their assignment is. In the Massacre chapters around Angel's rescue, she works alongside Harpoon and Blockbuster. Those three present very different problems at once: disorientation, an energy weapon and overwhelming physical force. Warren is already injured when Thor gets involved, so simply making the fight difficult enough to delay him is dangerous for the person he's trying to save. Thor is able to turn her attack back against her. It's a useful reminder that she can be countered, but having a counter doesn't make the power pleasant to endure. Someone with fewer options, or no idea what is happening, is in a much worse position. The encounter ends with Thor driving the three attackers away so he can attend to Warren. Vertigo has made the rescue harder, but she hasn't stopped it. For once, the person she is trying to unbalance has a way to send the sensation right back at her.
