6/6 · Pyro · Fire control Pyro does not wait for the X-Men to show off. During the Brotherhood's quarrel, he turns the flame from Blob's match into a creature large enough to frighten him. He enjoys the demonstration, and Blob's size does nothing to make him more deferential. His power is control over existing fire, which is why the flamethrower equipment matters. Once he has a source, he can shape the flames into attacking forms rather than simply throw a blast at somebody. The resulting creatures give his fights a theatrical quality, with the spectacle doing part of the intimidation. That dependence on flame also gives the X-Men a practical answer. Storm's rain can extinguish what he is using, while Wolverine recognizes the importance of his equipment. He is also a different sort of obstacle for Colossus than an opponent who wants to wrestle with him. A big shape made of flame invites the familiar response of meeting force with force, while presenting a much less convenient thing to grab. The visual joke of giving fire hands and a body becomes a real complication for the people fighting it. Storm's intervention is effective because she can deal with the material he needs. Wolverine focuses on the source strapped to his back. Their responses make his introduction more satisfying: there is room to be impressed by the display and still notice how a prepared opponent might interrupt it. Pyro fits this Brotherhood's temperament immediately: proud of his abilities, quick to threaten a teammate and quite prepared to use the same imagination against their enemies. Mystique has recruited someone who can turn a little available fire into a large and urgent distraction.
