MYSTIQUE'S BROTHERHOOD OF EVIL MUTANTS
1/6 · The Brotherhood
The new Brotherhood enters the X-Men's lives with an assassination plan. Mystique, Destiny, Avalanche, Blob and Pyro intend to kill Senator Robert Kelly, and Days of Future Past shows the terrible future the X-Men are trying to prevent by keeping him alive.
Mystique organizes the operation. Destiny offers warnings, Avalanche tears up the surroundings, Pyro shapes fire into attacking creatures, and Blob supplies the force that is hardest to move. Their abilities give them several ways to keep defenders occupied while someone reaches the target.
They also begin with an argument. Blob resents taking orders from Mystique, and his teammates are quite willing to put him in his place. The group can cooperate without liking one another very much.
The future sections give their plan consequences none of the fighters in the present can fully see. Kate Pryde has lived through the result and comes back carrying that knowledge. For the X-Men, protecting Kelly means protecting a man whose politics are directed against them. They cannot afford to let their dislike of him confuse what needs doing.
Storm is also leading the team through a very public emergency. She has to keep her people effective without allowing Wolverine's preferred methods to turn the rescue into another argument against mutants. Kelly's survival will not settle the larger conflict, and the story does not pretend that one good deed will erase his prejudice.
The Brotherhood's objective makes this an especially awkward fight for the defenders. These five do not need to conquer the X-Men or win a prolonged war. They need one person dead. The heroes have to manage the entire battle without losing sight of that single objective.
