4/7 · Harry Leland · Black Bishop Harry Leland looks like the sort of man who would let someone else handle the fighting. Wolverine finds out how misleading that impression is when the Black Bishop increases his mass until the floor gives way beneath him. Leland's power turns the room itself into part of the attack. An opponent can still have claws, strength and the will to keep fighting while becoming too heavy to stand. He does not need to trade blows with Wolverine to put him in serious trouble. He only needs to keep applying pressure until something breaks. When Wolverine returns, Leland makes the wrong adjustment. Logan comes down at him from above, and Leland responds by increasing his mass again. This time he makes the impact worse for himself. It is a nasty reversal because the power works exactly as it did before. The position of the two men has changed, and Leland reacts before thinking that through. That pair of encounters makes his ability easy to understand without making it seem harmless. On the first pass, Wolverine cannot fight his way out of the pressure. On the second, Leland helps turn an already dangerous attacker into something even harder to survive. There is a reason Logan goes straight back at him. The sequence also gives Leland a distinctly comfortable cruelty. He can explain what is happening while his opponent struggles through it. Within a circle of people accustomed to getting their way, his contribution is especially direct: resistance becomes physically exhausting. He can dominate the first encounter without being ready for the next. Wolverine remembers who put him through that floor, and Leland has given him a very personal reason to come back.
