HELLFIRE CLUB: THE INNER CIRCLE 1/7 · The Inner Circle The X-Men go looking for new mutants and find people who have already been watching them. The Hellfire Club has money, surveillance, armed personnel and access to rooms most people never enter. Its Inner Circle can make an attack look like a recruitment offer, then retreat behind the manners of respectable society. Sebastian Shaw heads the operation as Black King, alongside Emma Frost, Harry Leland and Donald Pierce. Jason Wyngarde is trying to secure his own place through his control of Jean Grey. Tessa appears as Shaw's attendant. The titled officers run the Club, while Wyngarde is using Jean to improve his own position in it. Angel's membership gets the X-Men inside the Manhattan club, but an invitation does not put them on equal ground. The people they are investigating know their identities and have prepared for them. By the time the fighting begins, the visit has become an ambush. Wolverine ends up below the building while his teammates are taken prisoner upstairs. That separation gives the story room for two very different struggles: Logan trying to fight his way back and Cyclops trying to reach Jean. Claremont, Byrne and Austin also make the clothes and rooms part of the attraction. The extravagant costumes belong in those interiors, even when the violence starts wrecking them. It is an unusually elaborate setting for the X-Men to get beaten so badly. The Club's greatest prize is a Black Queen it has manipulated into serving it. That victory helps destroy its plans. Across the Dark Phoenix Saga, the danger grows far beyond anything Shaw can manage, but the opening threat is painfully close to home: powerful people deciding that someone else's mind, future and abilities belong to them.
