Lorna Dane, the unwilling centerpiece Lorna is caught up in the Demi-Men's plans before she even understands her own abilities. Mesmero's summons brings her to San Francisco, Bobby finds her, and she is soon being told that she has a powerful father and a destiny waiting for her. Her magnetism makes her useful to the group. The family claim makes it harder for her to walk away. Someone who supposedly belongs to her own family is asking for loyalty, even as the X-Men are trying to reach her. In #51, that conflict becomes a choice about somebody's life. As the fortress comes apart, Lorna stays to help the man she believes is her father. The X-Men can see an enemy; she sees someone she has just been told she is bound to protect. Bobby tries to explain what Magneto has done, but an account of his crimes does not neatly erase that obligation. Bobby's feelings complicate things on the X-Men's side as well. Scott does not trust him to approach the next mission impartially. So Lorna's situation exposes a disagreement among her potential rescuers, too, rather than leaving five perfectly united heroes on the other side of the door. The story eventually gives her a way out. In #52, Bobby brings information that challenges what she has been told about her parentage, and she turns against Mesmero's side. That is the explanation this particular story gives her, rather than the final word on decades of later continuity. Lorna belongs in this thread because the organization is built around exploiting her. Calling her a willing founding member would miss what is happening to her. She is trying to get her bearings while everybody else seems to have a plan for her life.
