I'm adding Grimm Fairy Tales to the comics I want to talk about here, alongside the X-Men stuff. There is a lot more ground to cover with this one than the title might suggest.
I'm talking about Zenescope's Grimm Fairy Tales and the wider Grimm Universe. It starts with dark takes on familiar stories, with Sela Mathers bringing a book of fairy tales into people's lives when they have a choice to make. Over time, it grows into a shared universe with its own heroes, monsters, kingdoms, and wars.
Wonderland, Neverland, Oz, and Myst are real places in this setting. Their problems have a habit of making their way to Earth. Robyn Hood, Van Helsing, Belle, and plenty of others have their own stories running alongside the main book.
To keep track of all of that, my collection is broken into 13 eras. These are the reading-order groups I'm using, with rough date ranges that overlap:
1. Sela Anthology Foundation (2005–2007)
The early stories use familiar fairy tales to confront people with the consequences of their choices. Sela is the connection between them, and the mythology behind her gradually becomes part of the story.
2. Wonderland Begins (2007–2009)
Return to Wonderland, Beyond Wonderland, and Escape from Wonderland follow Calie Liddle and the damage Wonderland does to her family. This version takes the dreamlike weirdness of Wonderland straight into horror.
3. Expanding Realms (2008–2011)
The world opens up beyond the original fairy-tale format. My reading list brings in Sinbad and Salem's Daughter here, alongside the continuing Sela story. There are more characters to follow and more corners of the setting to explore.
4. Dream Eater Saga (2011–2012)
The first big Grimm Universe crossover pulls those different stories together. The Dream Eater is dangerous enough that heroes and villains have a common enemy, whether they like working together or not.
5. Robyn Hood, Oz, Godstorm, and Realm Expansion (2012–2013)
Robyn Locksley's story takes her into Myst, Dorothy gets Zenescope's version of Oz, and Godstorm brings gods into a world of modern crime. The cast and the kinds of stories being told keep growing.
6. Unleashed (2013)
Vampires, werewolves, zombies, and demons are released on Earth. Sela has to work with Belinda and a group of monster hunters to deal with it. This is a major meeting point for the fantasy and monster-hunting sides of the books.
7. Age of Darkness and Realm War (2013–2015)
The Dark Queen's campaign becomes a fight over Earth and the four realms. Sela and the surviving Realm Knights are up against an enemy with control of far too much of the world they're trying to save.
8. Arcane Acre and Apocalypse (2014–2016)
Sela takes on a group of young Highborns at Arcane Acre, bringing a school and a younger cast into the main story. That doesn't make life any safer. This stretch also includes the Apocalypse crossover, with Grimm Fairy Tales, Robyn Hood, and Hellchild facing the Four Horsemen.
9. Volume 2 Relaunch and Camelot (2016–2018)
Skye Mathers becomes the central Guardian, learning what her powers and the book of fairy tales can do. The Camelot stories bring Merlin and Arthurian legends into that struggle. This part of the reading order carries into the following period too.
10. Van Helsing, Belle, Gretel, and Jasmine Expansion (2018–2021)
More of the supporting leads get room for their own adventures. Van Helsing and Belle take on monsters, Gretel hunts witches, and Jasmine deals with the dangerous legacy of the Crown of Kings. Meanwhile, Skye's story continues across the realms.
11. Dark Book and Fractured Universe (2021–2022)
Skye's search for Shang leads through the Dark Book, followed by a struggle against the Dark Princess across other realities. Familiar places and people don't always mean familiar rules.
12. Lovecraft, Cthulhu, and Late Volume 2 (2022–2024)
The horror gets more cosmic, with Cthulhu and the Lovecraft legacy becoming part of the larger Grimm story. The main series and the surrounding books keep feeding into a world that already has more than enough trouble.
13. End of Time, Volume 3, and the Current Era (2024–present)
The Father Time conflict puts the realms themselves at risk. The newer Volume 3 brings Keres and the Tome of Blood and Shadow to the center of the fight against the creatures threatening humanity.
That's the broad layout I'm using. I'm still working through the books, so I'll get into individual characters and stories as I go. There's enough here for a lot of different posts without covering the same thing every time.
