1/7 Count Nefaria's hired villains (1966) Going back to an early group that belongs on this list: the five villains Count Nefaria hires in X-Men #22–23. Plantman, Scarecrow, Porcupine, Eel and Unicorn are a strange-looking lineup, but they get the job done at first. The original X-Men are separated, ambushed and delivered to Nefaria as prisoners. That's all five of Xavier's students captured. Nefaria wants to hold Washington, D.C. for ransom. He has the machinery to put a dome over the city, and he wants the X-Men working for him. When they refuse, he still finds a use for their public image. The story gets messy fast. The real X-Men are trying to stop him while people believe they're involved in the attack. Nefaria's own employees start eyeing the ransom. Unicorn decides sharing with the other villains would be a waste of money. There's a lot of elaborate equipment involved in this operation, and very little reason for any of these people to trust each other. These are Nefaria's 1966 hired villains. His later Ani-Men are a separate group.
