SCP-025: A Well-Worn Wardrobe
Object Class: Safe
SCP-025 is a wooden wardrobe full of damaged clothes. Different decades, different styles, all of it worn out in some way.
Put something on and, within 24 hours, you suffer an injury or die. The damage to your body corresponds to the damage in the clothing.
A missing fingertip on a glove can cost you the same fingertip in an accident. A missing sleeve can mean losing an arm. The incidents can look ordinary enough that nobody would think to blame the clothes.
Removing obvious hazards doesn't solve it. In an empty enclosure, the effect can manifest as disease or organ failure instead.
One test puts a man wearing a damaged sweater in a nearly empty room. The ceiling lights fall, and the broken glass penetrates the existing holes.
Another involves a scarf left on a researcher's desk. It resembles something he owns. He puts it on, later enters SCP-173's chamber alone and dies from a crushed windpipe, corresponding to the scarf's narrowed middle.
Someone put that scarf there. The file asks anyone with information to report it.
That is a very different problem from an old wardrobe sitting behind a locked door.
An object like this would make ordinary decisions exhausting. You'd go through every little thing you did afterward, looking for the moment you could have avoided it. If you'd stayed home, if you'd taken the other hallway, if you'd noticed the tear before putting it on. People already do that after accidents. Here, the connection is real, but knowing it still might not give you a useful way out.
The damaged clothes also provide a warning that's horribly incomplete. You can look down and see roughly where something might happen. That leaves plenty of time to imagine how. It would be hard to sit quietly and trust that somebody had made the room safe.
And the scarf incident adds a human being willing to exploit that. It doesn't take a complicated trap. It takes access to the collection and something the intended victim might wear without thinking. Whoever left it could be nowhere near the researcher when he died.
The wardrobe itself is classified Safe. Keeping the door locked is straightforward. The trouble starts when someone opens it and treats the contents as clothing again.
There are plenty of dangerous things you can recognize on sight. A faded shirt with a torn seam would barely earn a second look.
