4. Brainchild
Brainchild's enlarged head announces his place in the group before much explanation is needed. His intelligence is the defining result of Magneto's transformation, and his role places him close to the technical side of the Creator's operation.
In X-Men #63, Angel finds him working with Magneto while the others fight. That gives Warren direct evidence that the reassuring story he heard earlier was false. The supposed teacher is manufacturing powered followers, with one of those followers helping him continue the work.
Brainchild therefore occupies an unusual position within this first roster. He is a product of the process and a participant in operating it. That relationship makes him especially relevant to a group whose powers depend on someone else's equipment and authority.
While the others are sent out to stop the X-Men, Brainchild stays beside the machinery that created them.
