1. Savage Land Mutates: the original 1969 group The original Savage Land Mutates arrive in X-Men #62–63, cover-dated November and December 1969. Roy Thomas writes the story, with Neal Adams on pencils and Tom Palmer finishing the art. The group starts with Amphibius, Barbarus, Brainchild, Equilibrius, Gaza, Lupo and Piper. Lorelei enters in the second chapter. Their creator is Magneto, working under the deliberately grand name of the Creator. He has found another way to gather super-powered followers, this time using machinery to transform people living in the Savage Land. Their different abilities give the X-Men several problems to solve. There are physical attackers, animal controllers and opponents who interfere with perception. Getting past one member doesn't necessarily prepare anyone for the next. These people have been changed by someone else's experiments. Magneto's authority over the group begins with what he has done to their bodies.
