Sunder Sunder brings the first immediate threat into the Morlocks’ introduction. In Uncanny X-Men #169, Candy Southern returns to the apartment she shares with Angel and finds evidence of an attack. While she tries to reach Professor Xavier, Sunder confronts her, making the danger personal before the underground community has even been revealed. His mutant strength makes him one of Callisto’s most imposing followers. When Kitty Pryde escapes through a wall, he smashes through it after her. Callisto points out the flaw in that response: breaking masonry offers little advantage against someone who can become intangible. Sunder’s loyalty is especially clear in #170. He roughly silences Storm when she objects to Callisto’s treatment of Angel, then fights Colossus during the X-Men’s escape attempt. His physical power helps maintain the leader’s control over her captives. When Nightcrawler captures Callisto, however, Sunder immediately pleads for her safety. Across these scenes, his role becomes clear through action: he intimidates outsiders, follows Callisto’s orders, and becomes anxious when she is threatened. Even while enforcing Callisto’s rule, he reveals how much her safety matters to him.
