CHANCE Chance meets Roberto with very little interest in his self-image. Her sharpness is part of how she moves through a precarious life on the street. The people around her discover quickly that concern for her doesn't guarantee a grateful response. The miniseries also makes her central to its power problems. By #7, the group identifies her emerging ability to interfere with or increase other mutants' powers. Events that had seemed to expose somebody else's weakness acquire another possible explanation. That discovery changes her position as well as theirs. She has participated in Ariel's plans without imagining herself among the mutants who would bear their consequences. The Coconut Grove doesn't preserve the distinction she was counting on. Chance's story joins identity to responsibility. Learning what she is changes what she understands about earlier events and about the danger her companions face. The powers that have complicated their lives also create the possibility of helping them, provided she can accept that they are hers. Issue anchors: #7–8.
