WARLOCK Warlock follows Roberto because leaving a distressed friend alone makes no sense to him. His shape-changing body can make that pursuit look absurd, including a helicopter form, but his purpose stays simple: find his friend and restore their connection. In #2 he reaches Roberto when an attempted rescue has gone badly. Warlock's arrival gives Roberto practical help at the moment when his own power has failed. He then refuses to accept Roberto's insistence that being an outcast requires solitude. That makes Warlock a useful companion for this particular story. Roberto is constantly explaining what sort of person he has become. Warlock keeps responding to the person in front of him. Friendship, in his understanding, continues to involve actions. His mechanical appearance also belongs beside the series' cyborgs, mutants and other unusual companions. The group has room for radically different bodies. Warlock supplies one of its clearest examples of why appearance tells so little about how someone will treat a friend. Issue anchors: #1–2.
