Roberto's strength is exactly what frightens him at the beginning of Fallen Angels. After hurting Cannonball, he reads a confidential assessment that feeds his fear of becoming the kind of man his teachers distrust. He leaves the school before that fear can be talked through.
His pride travels with him. Even while declaring himself unworthy of his friends, he expects people to respect the da Costa name. Chance has very little patience for that expectation. Their encounters put his familiar confidence into a setting where it carries much less weight.
His first involvement in her life is an attempt to protect her from attackers. That choice complicates the identity he is trying to adopt. Roberto keeps finding people who need help, even while telling himself that he no longer belongs among heroes.
This story gives his solar-powered strength a different kind of problem to solve. He can recognize a dangerous situation more easily than he can recognize that one terrible mistake needn't determine every choice afterward.
