THE FALLEN ANGELS Fallen Angels begins in 1987 with Roberto da Costa deciding that he has failed at being a hero. An accident during a game with the New Mutants leaves him ashamed, frightened of himself and ready to leave. The people he meets in New York offer somewhere else to belong. The eight-issue miniseries gathers an unusually mixed company. Sunspot and Warlock arrive from the New Mutants. Siryn and Multiple Man begin as searchers. Vanisher has an existing street-level operation involving Ariel, Chance, Gomi and two cybernetic lobsters. Boom-Boom reconnects with the group, and Moon Boy and Devil Dinosaur join during its journey away from Earth. They have very different ideas about what membership means. A runaway wants acceptance. An adult criminal wants somebody else to pay for his comforts. Other members have reasons for recruiting people that their new friends haven't been told. Sharing a room doesn't settle any of that. Jo Duffy's story keeps asking what these people owe one another once they have called themselves friends. Its comedy makes room for selfishness, affection, bereavement and the consequences of a betrayal. Roberto's departure opens the story; the larger ensemble determines what he learns while he's gone. Issues: Fallen Angels #1–8 (1987). Created by Jo Duffy and Kerry Gammill; written by Duffy.
