RUSTY COLLINS: TRYING TO DO THE RIGHT THING Rusty's fire powers first appeared in X-Factor #1, where losing control of them had serious consequences. By the start of X-Terminators, he's one of the young people X-Factor has been helping. In the miniseries' opening, he chooses to surrender to the Navy. His position is that he will obey the law, but he won't agree to register simply for being a mutant. Skids doesn't like his decision, though she accepts that he's made it. That gives Rusty a problem before the demons even become the main issue. He's trying to stand by a principle while dealing with the institution he served in and the consequences of his powers. His relationship with Skids is part of the group's existing history. These characters have reasons to care about each other before they get a shared team name. For Rusty's first spotlight, that's the starting point: a young man trying to decide what responsibility means for him, then getting pulled into a crisis that puts his friends at risk.
