SCP-011: The Civil War Memorial
So, this one starts with a statue shooting birds because they keep landing on it and crapping on it.
SCP-011 is a granite Civil War memorial in Woodstock, Vermont. The soldier moves and fires a stone musket with granite ammunition. Early containment involved keeping him clean because, when distressed, he sometimes fired at people.
Then the file follows him developing over several years. Activity begins in 1995. He starts speaking, holds conversations with caretakers, and steps off his pedestal in 2002. By 2003–2004, he has reached human-level self-awareness. The original containment procedures end in 2004, although observation continues. Later updates mention romantic feelings toward his caretaker and an IQ of 133.
That gives you a very different story by the time you reach the bottom of the page.
At the beginning, you can understand why somebody would approach this as a maintenance problem. There's a monument doing something dangerous. Figure out what sets it off, keep the area clean, and keep people from getting shot.
But at what point does that stop being an adequate way to describe the situation? Once someone can talk to you, understand you, and develop relationships, treating them entirely as an object starts raising questions the original maintenance routine was never designed to answer.
The timeline does a lot of the work here. A long speech about consciousness wouldn't necessarily tell you more than these small changes do. A response to a caretaker, a conversation, a decision to step down: each one asks you to reconsider what you're looking at.
There's also something useful here from a storytelling standpoint. You can begin with a ridiculous situation and let it become more serious without throwing out the original premise. The statue doesn't need a completely different origin or a sudden secret identity to become a character. Spending time with it changes the questions being asked.
The unanswered origin still matters. The article doesn't explain what brought him to life. But an origin explanation and a character's development are two separate things a story can explore. You can understand more about someone over time even while knowing very little about how they came to exist.
In this case, following that development is enough to carry the entry.
