Post 4 of 7 SUNSPOT: ROBERTO DA COSTA Roberto da Costa’s first transformation happens on a soccer field. In Marvel Graphic Novel #4 (1982), a racist attack triggers his mutation, turning his body dark as solar energy fuels extraordinary strength. The crowd’s panic leaves him suddenly exposed in a place where he had been confident and familiar. Roberto comes from a wealthy Brazilian family. That wealth shapes his expectations, but it cannot make the attack harmless or tell him how his changing body works. His introduction puts an ordinary teenage setting under pressure until the match becomes a public crisis. The danger soon reaches his girlfriend, Juliana. Pierce’s mercenaries abduct her, and Roberto goes to meet them. During the confrontation, his stored energy runs out. Juliana dies protecting him from a gunshot, leaving him with grief and a fierce desire for revenge. The power limit matters here. Strength can make Roberto feel capable of taking charge, while the circumstances remain far beyond anything he has learned to handle. The reader sees how quickly confidence can become helplessness when he does not understand what his body can sustain. That is the Roberto who enters the founding class: proud, wounded and in need of people who can help him make sense of what happened. Learning to use his strength will also mean learning how to act when strength alone cannot keep someone safe.
