Post 2 of 7 KARMA: XI’AN COY MANH Karma comes to Xavier with responsibilities that extend beyond her own training. In Marvel Graphic Novel #4 (1982), Xi’an Coy Manh is a Vietnamese refugee raising her younger siblings, Leong and Nga. The school has to fit into a life in which other people already depend on her. Her mutant ability lets her take possession of another person. During Xavier’s examination, Moira volunteers for a demonstration. Hearing Shan speak through Moira frightens Rahne, who reacts protectively. A lesson becomes a small crisis because the students have different understandings of what they are seeing. Moira has agreed to the demonstration, but Rahne sees someone she trusts being taken over. Xavier has to deal with that fear as well as assess what Karma can do. Putting the students together has already brought up a problem none of them would face alone. Her family situation also gives the school a practical obligation. Somewhere to learn has to mean enough stability for her siblings to be cared for. A student cannot leave those worries outside the classroom simply because the lesson concerns psychic powers. Karma brings that wider sense of responsibility into the founding class. Learning control matters because she wants to build a life in which her abilities can help the people around her, including the family she has already worked to keep together.
