Post 1 of 7 THE CLASS
The New Mutants begin with five young people who need somewhere to go. Their powers have arrived in the middle of lives already shaped by family, money, prejudice and loss. Xavier’s school offers a place where someone might understand what is happening to them.
Marvel Graphic Novel #4, “Renewal” (1982), brings together Karma, Cannonball, Sunspot, Wolfsbane and Dani Moonstar, initially known as Psyche. Chris Claremont writes, Bob McLeod pencils and inks, Glynis Wein colors, and Tom Orzechowski letters. Louise Jones edits, with Jim Shooter as editor-in-chief. McLeod also supplies the cover. Those are the names used in the original credits.
The story starts with Moira MacTaggert protecting Rahne Sinclair from a mob in Scotland. That opening gives the school an immediate purpose: a frightened young mutant needs an adult willing to stand beside her. Across the book, the other students arrive with different reasons to need that help.
Donald Pierce gives their separate stories a common enemy. His campaign against mutants forces them together before they have much chance to understand one another. Their first shared problem is surviving a situation in which their abilities are powerful, unfamiliar and sometimes difficult to coordinate.
Sam has been working for their enemy. Rahne is afraid of what her own powers mean. Dani has firm conditions about joining the school, and Karma has younger siblings to care for. Xavier is taking responsibility for all of them while he still believes the X-Men are dead.
