Post 7 of 7 Snowbird: Anne McKenzie Snowbird’s first two appearances leave plenty unexplained, while making her immediate job easy to understand. X-Men #120 introduces Corporal Anne McKenzie as an RCMP records officer in Yellowknife. In #121, she takes to the air after Storm and keeps her occupied above the Stampede grounds. The pursuit reveals another ability. Snowbird changes into a giant Arctic owl, turning an aerial contest into something more physically dangerous. Storm now has to watch an approaching animal as well as the increasingly unstable weather around them. The owl can pursue Storm directly while she is trying to concentrate on the weather. Storm eventually traps her in her cape and breaks away to deal with the blizzard. It is a practical solution under pressure. She needs enough time to concentrate on the weather, so ending the pursuit matters more than prolonging the duel. Snowbird has been effective precisely because she has demanded that attention. The danger below makes that pursuit costly. Every moment she keeps Storm busy delays the one person who understands what is happening to the weather. She is doing the job Hudson needs during the fight, while the worsening blizzard makes that job increasingly harmful to everyone present.
