Post 5 of 7 Sasquatch: Walter Langkowski
Sasquatch announces the scale of Alpha Flight’s muscle by handling an aircraft. In X-Men #120, his intervention wrecks the plane carrying the X-Men. The scene turns an attempted detention into an emergency involving the people aboard. His strength is immediately impressive, and the damage immediately gives the mission consequences beyond catching Wolverine.
Walter Langkowski’s introduction also supplies a surprisingly specific civilian résumé: a former professional football player and a biophysics professor at McGill. Those details sit beside the enormous, fur-covered figure moving through the action. Hudson has called a scientist with a sporting career behind him, as well as someone strong enough to damage a plane.
At the Stampede grounds in #121, he is paired with Colossus. The match gives us two large, durable bodies and a simple question: how does Piotr deal with somebody who can meet his strength? Part of the answer is a judo throw. Changing the leverage gives the fight somewhere to go beyond another exchange of punches.
The pursuit also gives him a direct encounter with the man everybody wants. In #120, he ambushes Wolverine, knocks him unconscious and carries him away. Capturing the target proves easier than keeping the whole operation under control. Between the aircraft and the struggle with Colossus, his first mission leaves the reader with a clear sense of both his strength and the trouble surrounding its use.
