Raza enters X-Men #107 as one of Corsair's four adventurers. He's an armed cyborg joining a fight against the Imperial Guard, and the Starjammers' intervention helps the X-Men win it.
The victory doesn't stop D'Ken's plan. In #108, the emperor is still gloating while the M'Kraan Crystal threatens everyone around him. Raza loses patience, grabs D'Ken and throws him into the Crystal.
It's a blunt response to a ruler who expects other people to suffer for his ambition. Raza has the person responsible within reach and acts on it. The next problem is surviving what D'Ken has already set in motion.
The X-Men and Starjammers end up inside the Crystal, where fighting skills and weapons can't repair the damage. Phoenix has to attempt that repair with help from the others. Raza can get to the emperor, but bringing him down doesn't make the danger disappear.
His first appearance gives us a fighter already at home with this crew. The full story of his past can wait; his opinion of D'Ken is clear enough.
Issues: X-Men #107–108 (1977).
