SCP-009: Red Ice
Spoilers for SCP-009. Body horror.
With SCP-009, warming up makes things worse.
This red, water-like substance is liquid between -100°C and 0°C, solid above that range, and gaseous below it. Contact makes ordinary water acquire the same properties. That includes the water inside a person.
Exposure can start with mild warmth. Crystals follow, then a runaway reaction through the body. Victims can remain conscious during conversion.
Containment means a sealed tank, three redundant cooling systems, and no water-based solutions within thirty metres. Above -5°C, the chamber locks down and floods with coolant. Testing requires vacuum conditions, protective gear, dehydration, and quarantine. Super-cooling is also restricted: making it colder isn't automatically safer.
The Foundation recovered it after seal hunters were found encased in red ice in Alaska. The dry, cold recovery site helped prevent wider contamination. The file warns that proximity to seawater could have caused an extinction-level event.
The attached exploration log takes this further. A team follows tracks to a cave, passing another frozen victim near a fired spear-gun. Inside are animal bodies, a pool of red liquid, and a giant spider that appears to be made from the substance itself. Agent Cassidy identifies it as an instance of SCP-3023.
Then she finds an opening deeper inside. Beyond its mouth, the tunnel looks wet rather than frozen. There's a red puddle on the floor. Cassidy disappears from view and stops answering. Hewes wants to follow; Control orders the remaining agents out and says a recovery team will be sent.
The log ends there, without resolving what happened to her.
Despite its potential reach, 009 remains Euclid. Its origin is unconfirmed; the alternate-universe explanation is a hypothesis.
