SCP-008: Zombie Plague
Spoilers for SCP-008. Infection and body horror.
The containment instructions tell you how bad this gets: the facilities holding SCP-008 aren't supposed to have evacuation plans.
008 is a Euclid-class prion with 100% infectiousness and lethality listed in its file. It spreads through bodily fluids and exposed mucous membranes. It isn't airborne or waterborne.
Symptoms begin within three hours. Fever gives way to dementia, then a coma roughly twenty hours after symptoms start. The Foundation treats that coma as death.
The body keeps going. Surviving tissue becomes unusually durable, blood barely escapes injuries, and metabolism can slow enough to sustain an infected person for more than ten years without food. They're reduced to basic movement and attempts to eat living humans. Stopping a fully infected subject requires major cranial damage.
Anyone leaving a containment facility faces four months of quarantine. A breach, power loss, threatened dismantling, or eight hours without communications can trigger incineration and irradiation.
Its origin remains uncertain. A brief 1959 collaboration with the USSR sought to eliminate it; the later status of Soviet-held samples is unknown.
There is one extraordinary exception to the prognosis: SCP-500 can cure even advanced infection.
