PROFESSOR X: RECRUITER AND MISSION COORDINATOR Charles Xavier's role in Giant-Size X-Men #1 begins with finding people. The original team's disappearance creates an immediate need, and he travels to assemble the mutants who can help Cyclops bring them back. Those meetings show that the same invitation means something different to each recruit. Kurt needs safety and acceptance. Piotr has a family to leave. Wolverine is already employed by another organization. Sunfire and Thunderbird challenge Xavier's reasons for approaching them. Xavier's telepathy is central to his role, from intervening in the attack on Kurt to communicating during the rescue. He stays in Westchester while Cyclops leads the field squad, then joins the confrontation with Krakoa mentally. The issue gives him work that depends on his own abilities rather than placing him beside the eight-person rescue team. That separation also clarifies responsibility. Xavier gathers the people and supplies direction; Scott has to make immediate decisions with them on the island. Xavier uses a wheelchair throughout this period, and his telepathic reach allows him to support the team across enormous distances. The harder limit is how much he can expect from the people he's recruited. They arrive with lives and opinions of their own, and several openly resist the authority he's used to having at his school.
