STORM: ORORO ENTERS THE TEAM
Ororo's introduction in Giant-Size X-Men #1 begins with people turning to her for rain. Before she meets the other recruits, the story shows her weather powers as something that sustains a community. Becoming an X-Man asks her to take those abilities into a very different setting.
Xavier's recruitment challenges how she understands herself and her place in the world. She agrees to leave a life where she's revered as a goddess and join people who have their own powers, experiences and expectations.
The first meeting doesn't give her much reassurance about mutant solidarity. She notices the hostility among the recruits and says so. Ororo can be unfamiliar with this group without being unaware of how its members are treating one another.
Her early design carries that sense of presence: long white hair, a black outfit, a headdress and a cape that spreads with her movement. Her powers extend through the space around her. Wind carries her, while rain and lightning change the conditions of a fight.
Ororo already knows how to use her abilities when Xavier finds her. Working under Cyclops introduces another kind of responsibility: coordinating that power with other people, including teammates whose behavior she questions. She's given up a familiar place in her community before knowing whether this group can offer her one.
