CYCLOPS: THE RETURNING FIELD LEADER
Scott Summers has a different job in Giant-Size X-Men #1 from the one he had at the team's beginning. He's already an experienced X-Man, but the people he's about to lead haven't spent years learning how to work with him.
His briefing gives the new recruits their reason for being there: the missing X-Men need help. For Scott, those missing people include Jean, his brother Alex and teammates he's grown up alongside. He has to explain the danger while still dealing with the fact that he came back without them.
The rescue puts his leadership under pressure straight away. Scott has to keep the mission moving even when personalities clash, and the island gives them very little room to sort that out first.
His familiar blue costume, yellow gloves and boots, and red visor give him a visual connection to the previous team. His optic blasts supply force, but assigning people, making decisions and getting them to act together take up just as much of his role.
Scott knows how the original X-Men work together. With these recruits, he has to judge unfamiliar abilities and temperaments under pressure. They're also being asked to risk their lives for people who mean much more to him than they do to them. Giving the orders carries a different weight here.
