Professor X / Charles Xavier Founder and mentor The original five are the students. Charles Xavier is the person who brings them together, explains the mission and decides when they're ready to go outside and carry it out. In X-Men #1, his telepathy reaches Cyclops during the Cape Citadel mission. Xavier can guide the team from the school, so the distance between teacher and students doesn't end his involvement. He uses a wheelchair, and the story gives him an active role in directing events throughout the issue. His school has two connected jobs: give mutants somewhere to learn safely, and prepare them to protect people. He sets the exercises, assesses the students and chooses their first assignment. His students depend on him to prepare them for those fights. What counts as being ready is largely Xavier's decision. So is the amount of danger they're expected to face. He wants them to have a safe place to grow up, and he's also sending them against an opponent the military can't stop. Both responsibilities sit with him. After the mission, the students return to his supervision. Scott may speak for the group in the field, but Xavier still sets the direction. The original X-Men's first home is also their classroom and headquarters, with the same man running all three. Issue: X-Men #1 (1963).
