Iceman / Bobby Drake Bobby Drake is the youngest student, and he's already tired of being treated that way in X-Men #1. When Xavier gives him time to play, Bobby turns his snowy appearance into a full snowman joke, complete with props. Bobby wants more responsibility, gets frustrated when he doesn't receive it, then makes a joke out of the situation. Being funny is something he actively does with his power. His personality affects how that power looks on the page. The original design is snow-covered, with a rounded, rough surface and boots. His ability to create ice also gives the team options beyond striking an opponent. A barrier can protect someone; changing the surface or shape of a space can change how everyone moves through it. Control means deciding what to make as well as how cold to make it. Bobby's impatience with Xavier is easy to follow: he's standing beside the other students, ready to participate, while his teacher is deciding how much he can handle. He wants a tougher assignment. The jokes give him a way to push back without dropping the subject, and his abilities give Xavier something to keep testing. Issue: X-Men #1 (1963).
