Angel / Warren Worthington III Angel gets an early lesson in overconfidence. During the training in X-Men #1, Warren thinks he's ready for what Xavier will throw at him. A surprise disrupts his flight, and staying in the air suddenly takes his full attention. His power is easy to describe: large feathered wings let him fly. Using it well takes considerably more work. Turning, hovering and recovering when something goes wrong are skills Xavier expects him to learn. From above, he can see trouble his grounded teammates might miss. Warren comes from wealth, and his confidence fits that background. At the school, he shares the same rules and responsibilities as everybody else. His appearance has an everyday complication too. Those wings have to fit under ordinary clothes when he wants to conceal them. The yellow-and-blue uniform gives them room, with the broad white feathers making his outline instantly recognizable. Getting into costume is a relief for Warren because he can release the wings he's been holding against his back. He enjoys flying, but keeping that part of himself hidden takes effort. At the school, everybody already knows, and he has space to stretch out. Issue: X-Men #1 (1963).
