4/10 · 58. Epistle to Diognetus
Usually placed in the second century CE, though its date is debated, the Epistle to Diognetus explains Christian belief and conduct to an interested outsider. Its anonymous author describes Christians sharing ordinary civic life while following a distinctive set of commitments. It also argues against other religious practices of its time. Spirit Nation includes Lightfoot’s translation of this early defense of Christianity.
