7/10 · 51. Philo’s Embassy to Caius
Written in the first century CE, Philo’s Embassy to Caius brings us into the conflict between Alexandria’s Jewish community and Roman imperial power under Caligula. Philo describes the delegation he joined and the threat posed by the emperor’s demands for divine honors. It is a participant’s account shaped by his community’s fears and arguments. Spirit Nation includes C. D. Yonge’s 1855 translation of the surviving work.
