5/11 • Oxyrhynchus Fragments
A papyrus page found in Egypt in 1897 preserved Greek sayings attributed to Jesus. Later research connected it with the Gospel of Thomas. Spirit Nation has Grenfell and Hunt's original 1897 English readings of P.Oxy. 1, with the expanded 1904 publication available separately. These short, damaged passages bring readers close to the practical work of recovering ancient Christian texts: gaps, uncertain words, and changing readings all remain part of what we can study.
